They say faster-than-light travel is cheap. Well, "cheap" in the sense that hauling thousands of tons of cargo up a gravity well, across hundreds of light years then down again is actually practical. Even profitable, if one has an ounce of business sense.

Gar Chun-Ai, first-class pilot in the Mirridor Spacer Guild, didn't have any.

What he did have was a little old starship called the Na-Ha-Ola, his only reward after years of hard work. Three more payments and he would be the sole owner. Except he was on the verge of falling apart. It was the worst possible time for all that accumulated stress to come crashing down on him, but such was life.

His office overlooked a small concourse on the outer edge of the crater that housed the Mirridor Spaceport. The announcement was clearly visible, both as a holographic billboard and as a virtual display in the local cyberspace: "Small merchant ship hiring quartermaster". It was all the detail they needed.
