The Treasure Hunters of Mega

Background

Shadow, on :

I know the setting is not as well-defined as I'd like, so use this thread to ask questions, make suggestions, whatever. On my part, I'll post some vignettes, make up some sample characters, things like that. Hopefully we'll meet in the middle.

Don't forget the Megan Space "bible", either: [Ed: said "bible" moved about one year later; it's now on my wiki.]

Shadow, on :

Dock 14 was a ring, 100m in diameter, surrounded by a tall concrete wall. Several ramps climbed to the rim, with the double purpose to allow access and to host the pipes that evacuated the engine exhaust from ships as they took off or landed.

There was a vessel inside, too, shaped like a big T sitting horizontally on insect-like legs. The long, ridged cylinder of a torch drive ended in the armored sphere of a starship-grade power plant. The wide, aerodynamic front section was attached to the same via a short neck, and complex rigging on both sides supported the atmospheric engines as well as the hyper nacelles. All in all, a fairly typical Terran freighter - or so it seemed.

Captain Heberhegeck stood on the lowered main elevator, looking up at the looming hull of his ship. He was fairly typical too - for a Kinac. In fact, a Terran would have described him as a cross between a Grizzly bear and a sea lion: a squat bipedal with a thick fur and lots of muscle. He didn't have much in the way of a neck, but he did have closeable nostrils (several of them) and big round eyes that sparkled with intelligence. His uniform consisted of an utility belt, shoulder straps... and an attitude.

Shadow, on :

Motors whirred, and a shadow covered the sun.

"Excuse me, is this seat taken?"

The man at the table looked up slowly. His gaze climbed over a thin body, mostly covered in a powered exoskeleton. The woman wearing it was of average height, with pale white skin and a kind of brutish beauty. Her head was covered in an open-faced helmet from which cables flowed neatly down to a raised shoulder pad: a Cyblan, and a radical one at that.

She sat without an invitation, and crossed her bare forearms on the table, one lined with the chrome of hydraulics, the other covered in an ellaborate tatoo.

"I'm Joanna," she offered, "and I've just landed."

She pointed her chin at the spaceport gate, a quarter-klick away. The restaurant was halfway between it and the base of the mountain. The tables were on the outside, arranged so that the constant wind would carry away most smells and sounds from one of them. The good will to tolerate the presence and habits of other species needed help sometimes.

The man sighed softly. He was short but muscular, dressed in large, airy clothes, with a heavy-looking utility belt. Joanna had obviously gotten his attention, yet his eyes remained distant and dreamy. A Mythian, she realized. That must be it. He resembled a human so much, it was hard to believe they shared less than one percent of their respective DNA.

"Do you believe in fate, Joanna?" He asked suddenly. The medallion he wore around the neck translated to the Spacer dialect she had just used, and the synthetic voice mixed with his own, creating an eerie effect.
